CAVE by Melbourne Metal Collective

Organised by jewellers, for jewellers, the Melbourne Metal Collective was launched in 2011. The collective is comprised of seven local designers – Henson, Young Hunting, Estelle Dévé, Hamish Munro and new to the MMC in 2012 – O.T.T by Lia T, Alexandra Blak and Maripossa.

All seven designers have developed their very own strong identities, and are carried by leading boutiques in Australia and abroad. While their aesthetics are very different (some work with neon latex, others with Perspex, others with silver and gold) there is somehow a harmony of their personal aesthetics when observing their work as a collective.

The designer’s most recent works are currently featured in a temporary space in Melbourne’s timeless Curtin House. For two weeks only, their pop up store: CAVE will be acting as cave of wonders, filled with intriguing jewellery, one-offs and other curiosities which have inspired their collections.

CAVE will be open daily from 12 to 9pm until the 25th of March.

Peony Perfumerie

Everywhere you turn the evidence of a dying retail industry seems abundant. Stores with perpetual sales and special offers, desperately trying to win back custom and replenish declining profits in the wake of the booming surge of e-tail. But for over a year this weak strategy has continued to fail Australian retail and those at the top of the game are left bewildered, unable to see the forest for the trees.

You will never beat your competition by simply trying to copy them because they will always be one step ahead. Physical retail has but few benefits over the ease of e-tail and it is these small margins of difference that the flailing industry need to champion. The boutique experience can never be replicated online so why try to replicate the online experience in store?

Peony is Australia’s destination perfume emporium located in the heart of Auburn Village in Hawthorn, Melbourne. The store showcases the world’s most exemplary personal fragrance and home fragrance, as well as an astute selection of luxury skincare and body care products.

Proprietor Jill Timms has amassed the best of the heritage and contemporary perfume houses on her many trips overseas. The shelves of Peony hold a curated selection of brands; the prestigious Perfume Houses with historical royal warrants are represented; Creed, Rancè 1795 and Lubin. There are also a new breed of contemporary perfumers such as Amouage, Keiko Mecheri, James Heeley and The Different Company to name a few. Jill keeps close relationships with these artisanal fragrance houses, and they trust her with their brands.

The store has an unhurried atmosphere. Jill’s style of customer service is very personal and she greets her clients by name. Indeed, the intentionally old-fashioned customer service at Peony has not been replaced by an automated online shop. Jill has met the challenge of offering an online service to busy and distant clients, but still with the determination to be a full service offering.

Peony Perfumerie is located at 105 Auburn Road, Hawthorn.

G-Star

Last week I attended G-Star’s Women’s Night at their flagship South Yarra boutique. The European brand do a full collection of men’s and women’s street wear but they’re best known for their extensive range of innovative denim. I came home with this structured pair of black skinny jeans; the perfect fit for me andmy wardrobe.

False Economy

Penthouse Mouse is a temporary fashion, arts and events space that affords emerging designers and artists the opportunity to showcase their current work during the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival (LMFF). More than just a shopping location, Penthouse Mouse brings together installation artworks, parties, live photo shoots and other random happenings in a collaborative, freeform and innovative format.

On March 13th and 14th PHM will play host to the False Economy Department Store, specifically for the perusal and shopping of coveted AW collections from a plethora of local talent. Resisting the urge to freshen up your wardrobe may fail but if you must be distracted, grab a coffee from Cafe Lavazza or quench your thirst with a Coopers62 beer and wander the venue to enjoy art installations from the likes of Kirsty Hulm, Kristen McIver and many more.
