A Song For The Deaf

A Song For The Deaf is listed as the last track on the album Songs For The Deaf by Californian band Queens Of The Stone Age, but thanks to the dated addition of two “secret tracks” it’s kind of hanging just far enough away from the end for it not to properly command my attention.

This is the only explanation I have for taking so long to really HEAR this track after playing the album more times than I’ve had hot dinners. Since I finally had my A Song For The Deaf epiphany it’s quickly transcended the album and holds a coveted place as one of my favourite songs of all time. Perhaps it’s the dark and unsettling bass or the intoxicating way the melody seems to be constantly accelerating; but there’s something dangerously seductive about this track and I really feel like I don’t actually exhale until the song is over.

If you’re awesome enough to bother listening to it, wait until it’s quiet around you and turn the volume up high. You won’t regret it. Then go back and listen to the whole damn album because it’s pretty amazing.

Stinkfist

Sometimes you put an album on absentmindedly, and it transpires that what you put on was actually exactly what you needed to hear at that moment. I could launch into a passionate soliloquy about why this track is so perfect but it always feels so unnecessary when you can just press play – the music alone will educate you without any further explanation required.

However if you need further convincing to press play — the film clip for this track is completely brilliant.

L’Oreal Paris Runway 1 Presented By Grazia

Let’s be honest for a moment — nothing on the L’Oreal Paris Runway presented by Grazia is going to aesthetically appeal to readers of Sea Of Ghosts. However I was beyond delighted to discover that the soundtrack for the runway featured many of my favourite artists including Nine Inch Nails and Smashing Pumpkins.

Hearing Pug over the loudspeakers as the show began was a pretty epic moment; it’s one of my most-loved Smashing Pumpkins tracks and is runway perfect, but didn’t really resonate with Carla Zampatti the way it might have with a more appropriate designer.

I feel that there are many other NIN tracks that I’d have preferred to hear on the runway than Into The Void but it’s a pretty obvious choice for someone who isn’t well acquainted with NIN’s full catalogue. Does it go with riding crops and other equestrian inspired fashion by Nina Maya? Not really. Did I give a shit? Not really.

In contrast the soft femininity of Glory Box seemed kind of out of place with the other tracks but suited Leona Edmiston’s collection and comes out of the heart of the 90s none the less. I really love Portishead so it was well welcomed.

The rough grunge of Would? is actually such an awesome runway track that I was delightfully surprised to hear it. It was an interesting pairing with Rachel Gilbert’s glimmering sequined frocks.

Wake Up now has a permanent association in my mind with The Matrix, but the way the track builds up and detonates was a strange kind of brilliant for Sass&Bide’s runway considering the bold highly polished hardware juxtaposed with the soft watercolour prints.
