I didn’t know quite what to make of this track when I first heard it almost a year ago. Sometimes you just need to be in the right frame of mind to digest certain music. It’s been a while since How To Destroy Angels released their debut LP, Welcome Oblivion – but ever since I found myself in the right frame of mind I’ve been listening to it on repeat.
Ice Age is a funny little track, it sits in it’s own little universe apart from the rest of album. You could be forgiven for misunderstanding it completely as I did at first… but the strange and beautiful video helps conceptually tie the song back to the rest of the album, which has more of a glitchy dark electro vibe. What I love about this track though is the way it gives focus to Mariqueen’s vocals. It’s also one of the only tracks on the album that Trent doesn’t interrupt. I feel like there’s a lot of stylistic overlap between HTDA and more recent NIN (like some of the more experimental tracks on Ghosts and The Slip), so for me the real draw-card is the female led vocals – of which I definitely do not have enough in my collection.
