Nuffnang Asia-Pacific Blog Awards 2011
I was overwhelmed this morning to receive a phone call from the Nuffnang team to inform me that Sea Of Ghosts is a finalist for the 2011 Nuffnang Asia-Pacific Blog Awards in the “Best Fashion Blog” category. It’s an extraordinary honour as Nuffnang is an international network which means finalists are located from several countries across the Asia-Pacific region – not just in Australia.
I began blogging in 2008 and it’s been a very personal journey. I’ve never considered myself a fashion authority or someone with enviable style; quite the contrary. In many ways Sea Of Ghosts is the open diary of a girl who never felt comfortable in her own clothes until she had a good hard look at who it was she wanted to become and how she had to dress to be that person. I am growing into my own style more and more every day and it’s been amazing to have so many people just like me in the world follow and participate in that conversation.
I like to consider Sea Of Ghosts as a niche style blog and I acknowledge that it doesn’t always appeal to the common blog consumer. There is no overflow of unattainable luxury goods. No victory rolls or cherry red bicycle. No colour blocking or ultra-short denim cutoffs. No street style or party photos. No Starbucks takeaway cup.
Recently, independent trend forecasting agency Editd conducted a study into Australia’s “top blogs” for industry publication Ragtrader. Editd analysed a number of important metrics, including frequency of posting, page ranking, how engaged the blogger’s audience is and how influential they are via follows, referrals, links and mentions. I was surprised and delighted when I found out that their data placed Sea Of Ghosts first.
The reality is that the Sea Of Ghosts readership is vastly smaller than many of Australia’s most iconic fashion blogs and it receives less industry exposure — but the conversation that you and I share in this niche environment has authenticity and integrity.
And that’s the craziest, most humbling thing I can think of. It’s something I value very, very much.
If the conversation means as much to you as it does to me, I would deeply appreciate your vote. To support Sea Of Ghosts in the 2011 Nuffnang Asia-Pacific Blog Awards simply visit awards.nuffnang.com/votes from 9am on Tuesday 15th of November and choose Sea Of Ghosts in the ”Best Fashion Blog” category.
Voting closes at midnight, November 27th.

Lucinda shared this comment on Nov 14 11 at 11:00 PMVery well said Alicia and the nomination is well deserved. It’s fascinating that the top 5 blogs from the Editd study all have firm roots in Melbourne. I still remember a time when the only Australian blogs I knew about were you, Foxy Man, The Animal Orchestra, Fashion Hayley and Style Lines.

Keep doing what you’re doing – it’s obviously working.
P.S. I was one of the ones who nominated you so very pleased.

When I read this post the first thing that popped into my head was that scene from the movie Juno when she tells Bleeker that he’s “golden man”. You’re golden man.
Except, you would be more matte black and leather with sharp pointy studs.Reading this post reminded me why you’re one of my favourite bloggers. You have such a unique voice and each and every one of your posts gives just a tiny insight into your excellent and stylish brain. You rule Alicia.
Mal shared this comment on Nov 15 11 at 1:49 PMCongratulations, a well deserved nomination. I love your blog, and your down to earth writing and content. I’m glad that you stay true to yourself and don’t write for others, it’s very refreshing.
Veggie Mama shared this comment on Nov 15 11 at 2:39 PMI had not heard of you until today… but reading this one post has convinced me to vote for you. Repeatedly, if necessary! Congratulations :)
Esc shared this comment on Nov 15 11 at 9:38 PMCongratulations Alicia! I have been a reader for a few years, but have never left a comment. Your blog is one of the few I check daily; it’s your writing style that I keep coming back for – your content has depth of character that I feel so many other fashion blogs (although fun to look at for a quick read/the visuals) lack. It has been really interesting to see your style and blog evolve to become more ‘you’ (as you nicely articulated above) over time. You’re a fantastic writer. Thank you for sharing your journey to refine your aesthetic with us.
By the way, voting doesn’t seem to be open yet.
Gaby shared this comment on Nov 15 11 at 10:03 PMThis is so amazing Alicia, congratulations, and as everyone has already said you are so deserving. I know you are going to continue to go on to greater and greater things, and as I have said many times before I can’t wait to watch your journey!

You definitely deserve the nomination. The reason why I keep coming back to your blog is because I admire your aesthetics and I can relate to you even though we live in different countries. Keep it up, your readers love that you’re different, and good luck :)
