Tim Burton: The Exhibition

Direct from the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Tim Burton: The Exhibition explores the art and imagination of one of Hollywood’s most unique filmmakers. An Australian exclusive, the landmark show brings together over 700 examples of concept designs, drawings, paintings, photographs, puppets, costumes and films. This extraordinary range of artworks charts Burton’s 28-year career from his earliest works to his most recent portrayal of Alice In Wonderland.

I was delighted to have been invited by ACMI and Nuffnang to review the exhibition and visit the Burton Bar. Arriving at just the right moment, I was also very lucky to get a seat in the Masterclass with Burton hosted by Margaret Pomeranz.

In the Masterclass Burton discussed growing up feeling normal but being treated like an outsider, and how he empathised with the antagonists in horror films as a child. It was such a fantastic experience being able to hear in his own words his choices and inspirations behinds his most famous works. Sadly Burton did not have the opportunity to go into more detail about his work as an artist; I would have loved to have known more about his choice to go back to poetry and art with the release of his book The Melancholy Death Of Oyster Boy in 1997 after a slew of cinematic successes.

Although I’ve felt less of an affinity with several of Burton’s more recent film re-visitations (you couldn’t really call them re-makes when generally they’re all vastly different to their original counterparts) I’ve been a dedicated appreciator of Burton’s highly stylised and delightfully deranged artistry for many years.

A feast for the senses, Tim Burton: The Exhibition is the largest temporary exhibition to ever be staged at ACMI. Curated in three thematic sections; Surviving Burbank, Beautifying Burbank and Beyond Burbank; the exhibition includes several elements not previously seen at MoMA. I loved the exhibition so much I’ll most certainly be returning before it closes on the 10th of October.

Thanks to ACMI and Nuffnang, I have five “buy one get one free” passes for Tim Burton: The Exhibition to give away. ENTRIES ARE CLOSED. Thank you for entering – if you’ve won you’ll be notified via e-mail! xo

Hi Alicia,
I’ve been reading your blog for ages and this is my first ever comment!!
My favorite Burton film has to be Ed Wood- I love Ed Wood’s films (often considered to be the worst movies of all time) and loved the 50′s shlock appeal of Tim Burtons bigraphical film.
Plus, Johnny depp looks awesome in an angora sweater.

Your photo of Jack Skellington’s various facial expressions/heads made me smile. Here’s hoping I can make it down to Melbourne to see this exhibition before it closes…

I’m so excited to see this! I’m lucky I have to fly to Melbourne for work this weekend, I’ve planned a later flight on Monday so I can hopefully get in and have a look! I adore Tim Burtons work.

This exhibition looks amazing! I’m headed to Melbourne next month (I live in Perth) and I would LOVE the chance to go when I’m there. I was so excited when I found out about the exhibition.

I really like your last photo of Tim!

Edward Scissorhands is my favourite Tim Burton film. Just think of pastel houses with matching cars and a scary haunted castle surrounded by shaped hedges. Amazing!

georgina shared this comment on Jun 29 10 at 6:55 PM

My favourite, and first Tim Burton is Beetle Juice. I stumbled upon it one very late night (for a primary school-er) and was taken in by the story, visual style, Lydia and her camera and of course the grotesque Beetlejuice!

Corpse Bride!

… and my three year old loves the Fox and the Hound, which Mr Burton was involved in, back in the day.

Jay shared this comment on Jun 29 10 at 8:49 PM

Definitely Edward Scissorhands! Can’t wait to see the exhibition

Lauren shared this comment on Jun 29 10 at 9:42 PM

Ohhhhh, that is a tough question! I think I’d have to say The Corpse Bride because that’s the first one that comes to mind and if I thought about it too closely it would be too difficult to pick!

Beetlejuice…LOVE Beetlejuice!

The quality of ACMI’s exhibitions over the past few years has really impressed me. I made the trip from Canberra for the Game On exhibition, and I’m doing the same for this one. I really regret missing the Pixar one.

As for my favourite Burton film, it’s Sleepy Hollow. Depp as the very un-heroic hero, and Christina Ricci’s amazing costumes. Might be time to re-watch that one.

Lisa shared this comment on Jun 29 10 at 11:26 PM

Edward Scissorhands always and forever.

Oh, I do hope I can get to Melbourne to see this exhibition – I was shattered that I was in New York just slightly before it was on there. Seeing the ads for it everywhere was such a tease!

My favourite Tim Burton film is Edward Scissorhands. I cannot get through it without weeping tragically.

Nadia -The Animal Orchestra shared this comment on Jun 30 10 at 10:03 AM

Ooooooh yes. Sleepy Hollow for the win over here.

ellie shared this comment on Jun 30 10 at 11:49 AM

Gosh, Edward Scissorhands for sure. That suit, the confusion and seduction. A childhood favourite I cannot wait to introduce to my children someday!

I have to agree with Ellie and Lisa – Sleepy Hollow is such an amazing film – Christina’s costumes are completely swoon worthy and the Jack O’Lanterns and Scarecrows are to die for.

I’d love to be be considered for this competition darling.

Now, do tell, what is YOUR favourite Burton film?

Xx

I haven’t been back to Melbourne since I moved up here, but this exhibition might just do it. I love Tim Burton, and your photos are fantastic.

This is fantastic, I’m so excitied! Love it!

I’m going to have to say Beetlejuice! Such a great movie
before all the hype, before I even knew who Tim Burton was
I used to love this movie as a kid, I broke the video player watching it so much!
It was most likely the first Tim Burton movie I ever had the pleasure of viewing
90% of his movies bring back warm childhood memories, I didnt realise
untill recently how much he was a part of my childhood! Pretty amazing

Madeleine shared this comment on Jul 02 10 at 2:00 PM

You know I love all of his movies but my most favorite thing of Burton’s was his animated short – ‘Vincent’. Who couldn’t love Vincent and his zombie dog Abercrombie….and narrated by Vincent Price! Heaven!

The exhibition looks amazing – can’t wait to go!

Amy shared this comment on Jul 02 10 at 4:35 PM

Ooooh! Yes. YES YES YES. I am unbelievably excited right now because I’m going to be in Melbourne in a few weeks and I am SO THERE. Oh wow I can’t wait.

Can’t say just one: So beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands

Jess shared this comment on Jul 04 10 at 11:40 PM

Growing up loving Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. What child wouldn’t love an adventure chasing after their dream bike. I have loved Tim Burton work since Batman where I believe Batman really was “The Batman”.

But…..The Nightmare before Christmas by far is my favorite movie by Tim Burton, it scared me the hell out of me the first time i watch as a child. But i grew to love it as time goes by. The musical numbers are awesome and the stop motion clay animation is amazing and is truly a one of a kind movie! It was his world, going yet into another world. Tim Burton never seizes to amaze me with his creativity in his own world of Imagination & bring us into a whole different world of character’s.

I just love it when he use’s Johnny Depp in his movies. With Tim Burton’s Imagination, & the amazing acting of Johnny Depp, magic happens :)
